Those who know me understand my 'thorough' nature. My daughter calls me OCD (but I don't think I am that extreme - lol). It is my drive for perfection/thorough nature/OCDness that led me down the path of being an all natural farmer. When 7th Heaven Farm was started, in 2005, it seemed 'normal' to create an environment that mimicked each animals' natural habitat (less its climate and ability to roam endlessly). This included its diet. Before purchasing an animal, I researched it's origin, behavior and diet, as well as its digestive system. In order to meet an animal's daily nutritional requirements, one needs to understand how their body digest various feed stuff. A proper diet not only nourishes the animal, it also prevents health issues. As we know, food (even for us) is preventive and curative. The type of feed stuff offered impacts the animals welfare. For example, a goat or sheep that is feed grain only without access to hay, forage (pasture) and browse (wood) will most likely develop dental issues, hoof root and urinary stones. The list of diseases and disorders associated with an animals' poor diet is huge. Almost every health issue that occurs on a farm can be traced back to diet, cleanliness and treatment. That is why my farm is cleaned daily; the animals are feed a proper (not just balanced) diet; and they are given the same love and attention as my domestic pets (cats and dog). In order to be a good caregiver to my critters, I needed to have a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to create a environment, and provide a diet that MORE than meets their needs. I believe that I have been successful in creating a happy and healthy home for my farm critters. But my recent switch from sheet and goat production to pig and poultry mandates a new feed regime. Since my sheep and goats did not require grain, there was not a need for organic or non GMO feed stuff. Now that pigs and poultry have entered the picture, there is a huge need for non GMO, corn free and soy free whole grain feed. Most farmers in NJ (all that I know), feed their pigs and poultry a corn and soy mixture -- this literally turns my stomach. Genetically modified or not, organic or full of chemicals, this diet is 100% UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!! No animal can digest corn and soy is a carcinogen. If you do not believe me, go to Feedipedia.org and read about the pros and cons of soybeans. It is alarming. While researching, you may want to read about the pros and cons of you eating soy as well -- just a little food for thought. It took a long time, but I have final found the right people to help me formulate and produce balanced rations that are non GMO, soy free, corn free and preservative free; and now we have a gluten and soy free layer option as well! 7th Heaven Farm Feed ingredients come from local, Non GMO Project Certified grain producers; the balancers are organic and from Fertrell; the enzymes are from Alltech or Fertrell; and the feed is mixed and bagged at a Non GMO Project Certified mill in PA - Triple M Farm. 7th Heaven Farm's Feed is is available to the public.
